Evening all
So by now you will have all got over the shock of todays debacle in parliament, so I thought I might bring something a little more positive into your lives.
So today I had to go up to Loop 6 on the Iron ore line , so as normal I tried to book a guest house in Vanrynsdorp but all my regulars where full , so I started looking further afield .
Well I chanced upon the Maskam Guest Farm and booked i....sight unseen.
Now I have stayed in many establishments around this great country of ours ...some where good , most are mediocre, a few are exceptional and the vast majority of them are just plain shit.
So what do I look for in a guest house....
No 1 ...value for money ...Im not looking for glitz and glamour , but I want clean and presentable. I want friendly service clean linin and a decent TV. and a well equiped kitchen if it is self catering.
So I arrived at Maskam this afternoon and was received like I was a long lost friend ...These people just couldnt do enough for me. I was shown to my cottage ...and I was gobsmacked ....beautifull. and what a view. The owners told me a bit about the Maskam and Gifberg mountains then invited me for dinner. But being the loner that I am ...I declined...I wanted to soak up the solitude and enjoy the superb mountain view alone with my thoughts. .....and a few Windhoeks.
It was suggested that if I had an hour or two to kill, I might want to explore the Gifberg Pass later in the afternoon which I did. At this point I must mention that I am not on my bike , but in a cage . Anyways took a drive and went up the pass. I havent seen much written about the Gifberg pass , but Its definitely worth doing.
The oass is about 10 km long with some spectacular views and interesting rock formations. Its fairly steep in some parts and in the rainy season I can imagine it would be challenging.. Today the road was in good nick as it looked like it had just been scraped. I think the pass eventually takes you to Unionkraal..
Anyways I spent a very pleasent hour or so on the pass before I went back to the guest farm.
Had a very nice braai on my lonesome ownsone with some exquisite lamb sosaties from the local butcher and a few ice cold Windhoeks . It is a moonless night here tonight and the stars are amazing, as there is no residual light from the town. The other thing which I have not seen in years are fireflys ....the veld is like a fairy land with all these things flying around.
So to end off ...Maskam Guest Farm is superb , brilliant setting , excellant accomodation and real frienly service.
I will be definitely coming back here ....next time on the XT.
Will post pics tomorrow when I ger back home.
