Due to the fact that I am self employed I work every second weekend and alternatively take a long weekend from wednesday afternoon to sunday evening. This puts me out of sinc with most people resulting in a lot of solo riding.
The best aspect of going solo is the freedom of choice regarding speed ,distance, breaks and destination.
Being dependant on your own skills also forces you to be self sufficient in being able to maintain the bike in respect of puncture repair and carrying spares relevant to your bikes requirements.
Some of my best biking memories are solo rides being out of my comfort zone -these include overnight Koekenaap to Groenriviermond-Gysemanshoek at night in the rain and down Bastervoetpas.
Whilst riding some routes you may question your sanity  the memories are priceless.
I believe that with good preparation the reward is greater than the risk.
The biggest downside is however that some nights can be long and lonely.
