Satellite data stored in the GPS receiver can be transferred to a PC as Waypoints, Tracklogs and Routes. The reverse process is also available. Various software programs are available that recognizes this data, allowing the user to edit them with a simple graphical interface, etc.
My personal choice at this stage is GPS TrackMaker (Website). Very nice features, such as a plug-in whereby it plots the WP's directly on to Google Earth, insertion of map images, and basically everything the other packages have. But the biggest plus is that its FREE.
