Last week was one from hell for me.
I have been under a lot of stress from work and I needed the "time out".

Not sure, maybe I had been a bit grumpy, but my wife was so keen for me to do this ride, she even helped me mount my new Safari tank on Friday night. No mean feat I must add ... but that's another story!

There are four things that I took from this ride.

1. We live in DS riding heaven. With the awesome passes, long gravel roads, still to be explored roads just on our door step ... the list goes on!
2. There is nothing better than a day in the saddle to blast the stress away. My work worries hardly crosses my mind for the 13 hours I was on the road. After Saturday's ride, I had my first proper nights rest in a week.
3. Mud is not a monster. Momentum is your friend!
4. The 990 is a Awesome machine.

I won't say that I have mastered mud, but I learnt a lot on this ride. I must add, having a full 40 plus liter Safari tank did not help.
I was so keen to "fill her up" I did not factor in the fact that I only needed half a tank to the next stop. What also did not help was the fact that my front tyre was done! 13k on the TKC and it was well past it's best.

We hit the first bad patch just before the new distribution station. I was not paying attention and I was in the "slop" before I even knew it. So I did what any rockie does ... stand up, freeze up, fall over. Luckily the latter did not happen, but it was close! My rear wheel was already 45% out to my left, and I was looking for the driest puddle to flop into, when the mud stopped ... shew!

30 Km latter, I started getting the hang of this. I noticed that the faster I went, the easier it got. I also found that putting your weight over the handle bars helped, and don't worry about the rear wheel, it will take care of itself (given the momentum). I must say that I started enjoying the challenge so much that I did not notice that Andy had stopped to chat to a farmer. This resulted in me charging ahead some way and had to back track.

The "new track" had it's own challenges, deep ruts, rocky outcrops and flowing streams ... yes in the Karoo.

Over the mountain, it was a short stretch to the N1. It was weird riding on tar again after K's of slippery mud.

After a bite to eat at Touwriver, we set out for Montagu (via the Rooiberg pass). As we left, Andy said I should blast ahead as this road was "built for the 990". I declined, thinking that I had pushed my luck enough today. But when I saw those long straight gravel roads, I could not help myself, and exceeded the speed limit a bit! Man that road is just awesome.

Our planned route had to take a detour when we hit the Breede river in full flood. It was at that point that we parted, Andy off to the N1 and myself home, via Villiersdorp and Grabouw.

Photo's you ask, I have none, just words and an experience that will last a life time!
