The new Hi3 LED Spots is now available from West Coast Parts.
In black and brushed steel they are attractive and have an up-market feel to them. The body is made of black anodized aluminium while the cover is brushed steel with five drilled indents on the inside rim to give them a premium feel. The lens is a special thing. Not the traditional flat glass, a moulded plastic lens integrates lenses in clear plastic. The benefits are a very long throw, combined with a wide viewing angle.
Apart from looks the units have the goods to deliver.
Three of the latest CREE XP-L HI LEDs are employed for 3000 Lumen of light. Specially formed lenses surround the LEDs to focus light. Despite being only 3000 Lumen, they have a Hi-beam distance of 339 meters from 3 000 Lumen (a 25% increase over Spot 3600 it replaces).
An integrated low beam setting at 15% paired to dims can be uses at night, or as Daytime Running Lights.
I tested them and they have a surprisingly wide angle of view, making them ideal for being seen from an angle, hence their suitability as DRLs.
A Strobe Mode is for event marshaling or special use.
Sturdy mounts make them ideal for Dual Purpose bike use.
Wiring is straight forward.
For strobe light and basic installation: Black (ground) and red (positive) provides power to the unit, and activates the strobe light at the same time.
For low beam, connect the bike's low beam positive wire to the green wire (of the light) to activate low beam.
For high beam, either disconnect green, or just add a positive feed from the bike's high beam to the purple wire, and the full 3000 Lumen is released.
This makes installation easy on most bikes. On new KTM 1190 or 1290's power feed has to happen directly from the battery, but the green and purple feeds works similar to a relay, with a only trickle feed needed to activate low or high beam.
Deutch Waterproof (IP67) Connectors included.
These lights have been designed from scratch in South Africa. The good news is that they are IP67 waterproofing (up to 1 meter).
