It was time. The weather forecast promised it would be hot with thundershowers but what the hell, we planned this trip and we’re gonna ride. So we gathered on a good Friday morning to left at 10 as decided.

We were like sheep just after the gate opened, mauling for some time, losing each other at the turnoffs but at the end everyone found the road out of town and we rode, 8 bikes (2 followed later on) and the back up vehicle. At first the well known roads that took us to Wellington, over Bainskloof pass, past Calabash and to the Tolhuis in Michell's Pass pass, just outside Ceres for a lekka brunch.

Then on via Ceres, Gydo pass and a right turn at Op-die-Berg and eventually, the less known gravel road towards Cederberg Oasis, our first overnight stop. The roads were good and we all arrived at the Cederberg Oasis in high spirits. Did I mentioned it was hot-az-hel?

Gydo pass is always something special.

We got a good, no a very nice, camping spot and set up camp for the night.

The swimming pool was irresistibly attractive and soon we found ourselves cooling down.

The day ended after a nice braai, good company, excellent conversation, lots of chirps and Eisbein treating us to playing the guitar and gooiing a few songs.

Another hard day in Africa

Gerrit and Chantal were really good hosts and after a wholesome breakfast on Saturday morning we split into two groups. 4 Bikes and the back up vehicle would ride via Eselbank, Wupperthal, Uitspankraal (crossing the Doring river) towards Die Bos and the rest would turn back and ride via Katbakkies pass to meet us again at Gannaga Lodge.

Soon after we left and started the journey towards Eselbank it was no secret that this was going to be a hot day. The scenery, the feeling of solitude and the excitement of an entire day of riding over mostly unknown territory totally made up for the uncomfortable temperature that constantly reminded us of the promises earlier the week about temperatures of up to 44 degrees Celsius.

The waterfall at Eselbank brought a little relief in the form of could river water that some splashed over themselves and others even took a swim in.

The road towards Wupperthal was a blast and we arrive close to mid day. Did I mention it was Hot-az-hel?

We took in as much water and cold drinks as possible before we left for Uitspankraal, where we crossed the Doringrivier.

A few kilometres after the river crossing the roads got smooth and we picked up speed as it became late afternoon and we could see thick blue clouds and lightning in the direction of Gannaga pass where we were heading.

The other group eagerly awaited us at Gannaga Lodge when we arrived just before sunset and the usual camaraderie just continued.

I must emphasize that here again, our hosts Johan and Robert just rounded off a perfect day of great fun and relaxation with friends.
P1100328.jpg

We were advised by the locals not to take the Ouberg pass back on Sunday as we intended, so we decided to go back via Gannaga pass again towards Ceres. We encountered some fresh wash-a-ways on the road towards the R355. It must have been the result of the previous day’s thunderstorms and exactly the reason why we decided not to do the intended route back after some well informed advice.

At the Katbakkies turn off three bikes and the back up vehicle split from the rest of the group, who did Katbakkies the previous day, and want to proceed to Ceres.

We had lots of fun and our last stop was for refreshments at Calabash before we all proceeded home.

Did I mention the people, riding, camaraderie, chirping, fun and laughter……oh!!.…and the temperature, was HOT-AZ-HEL?

Looks ok now in IE, Chrome still struggling a bit.

Thanks, I enjoyed the Doringriver bit, we had to turn around there last year, the stones weren't even showing.

Nice ride, stunning area...what was wrong with Ou Berg?

Locals told us it could be difficult to ride after thundershowers and some bikes had pillions.

Yes, up to April it is fine, thereafter not advisable to cross.

Hi there!

Ouberg isn't the problem, but the local guys said that the roads from middelpos to Ouberg was badly washed out, so it would have been a '1st 2nd 3rd third, slow-down-for-the-washed-out-bottom-rut-1st 2nd 3rd-repeat' affair for the 180 kilo's and we didn't have time (or where in the mood) for riding like that (and the possibility of of damage/getting hurt).

We've had a little bit of those types of roads when we did a circular route to Sutherland and back last year and apart from it not being fun there was at least one time where you couldn't see the drop in the road before you were on it. And then you would have your hands full to get the bike slow enough before you hit the rut/rocks at the bottom.

We don't know if it would have been the same, but according to a couple of different local guys' advice it surely sounded like it was the same type of thing.

Joyride - thanks for posting!

If I may I'll hook my own story onto this report at some stage as well.

:D

I see you beat me to an answer ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Up to November (according to T4A it is flooded from Apr to Nov).

I also had to turn around last year there returning from the Bash.

Please, feel free Eisbein. :thumleft: I trust that some of the other companions will also add to the report. The other way around on Saturday is still unacounted for.

Aaa..'cos we were there 2 weeks prior, and to be quite honest, the Ceres - Ouberg - Middelpos  was considerably smoother than the Ganagap - Doring river stretch.  You can read about it here: https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=45962.msg909318#msg909318

But the heat...for a Christian like me..it was hot  ;D and I had to fix 4 punctures over 80 km, the first one happened as we dropped down to the Doring (we did it in the opposite direction than you.) I stuck with the puncture till we got to the Doring (about 5 km) so that we can have a dip before trying to fix it. Not having a center stand, I collected rocks to stack under my bike, but they were to hot to pick up, so I wetted my T-Shirt to throw over the rock before attempting to lift it, and it promptly cracked....so yeah, I know what you talk about when you say HOT.

Nice riding though, and reading your report the memory of the heat is already dissipating like morning mist before the sun...and I ready to go..bastids  :thumleft:

Thank you for the write up.

Ai lekker!! Ja ek is lus vir n trip!! Baie lus. Dagtrippies kry nie meer die gejeuk weg!! :thumleft:

Thanks, I can see clearly now. Stunning  8)

I flew jo JHB the other day, and it was such a pain to sit in the plane and see Katbakkies, R355, etc coming and going, and not being there on a bike. Those are special places for me.

Ag no!

Was planning to do Ouberg when we go....

So, should we rather then go to Middelpos from Sutherland, do the Gannaga Pass, down the R335, Do the Katbakkies Pass to Op die Berg and back to Ceres???

The riding and the strange beauty of the area made up for the heat.....

Always a pleasure to share with someone who can appreciate it!!

They maintain those roads really well and it may be repaired by now. I would say contact SAPS at Middelpos or the Hotel (Oom Koos) beforehand and ask about the road conditions. The locals always knows best about these things.

lekker maatjies, lyk asof julle dit baie geniet het jong !!

waar gaan die tyd het dat ek al die lekker festivities so mis??
