How do I improve cold start performance????

How can I improve cold start performance and what are the causes of poor performance on a freezing cold GP morning? When I start in the morning the bike has to idle for a good few minutes before its ready for the road - only on cold mornings (below 10degrees). If I engage first gear to early it just dies as if there is not enough oomph ???

Please stick to layman's terms - don't know much about them mechanicals.
