I know that the amount/quality of photos accompanying this RR isn’t the greatest. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, my employers deserve the better ones. Secondly, the official photographer’s stuff only became available recently.

So now I can hopefully add some more.

I was really honoured to have been chosen. The people who chose me had their reasons, it being a combination of being a fair (enough) rider and a fair (enough) writer who could supply material to the widest possible audience. No money changed hands and I didn't 'punt myself'. I got a phone call out of the blue. Simple as that.

Allow me to quote Judge Harry Stone of the comedy series Nightcourt who, when asked how the hell he ever managed to become a judge, replied something to the effect of:

“Well you know, when they had a vacancy on the bench they started calling the candidates from that list. Problem is, it was Thanksgiving and everyone, all the top candidates, were away doing something else. I was last on that list and I was the only guy who answered his phone that weekend. But you know what? Even if I was the last guy on that list – I was still on that list. So as far as I’m concerned, I’m good enough for this job.”

The first photo was on the first afternoon, after we settled in. Team SA and moi being all excited, hoping I wouldn't embarrass myself or the team.

Many of the others feature myself: Bike #150, mainly because I won’t really use them that much in my articles. That would be too much like namedropping, ag place dropping, ag, I mean, number dropping.

There was this mudhole the guys needed to get through against the stopwatch. Fun!

Then there was the tractor tyre slalom and sprint. We won!

Deep sand in Moz. Eish.

1. Rowing on lake Jozini. Me and Roger Kane-Berman pulling out an early lead. We were home first against the UK, but due a missing rope, we couldn't tie the boat to the jetty in time and subsequently lost.

2. Slow race at Jan du Toit's farm.

There were a few tunnels. One excercise involved pushing bikes into one tunnel and out another. The other involved riding into this moerse big tunnel and guessing a) how far you've ridden and b) how long the tunnel still is.

1. Over a hump. A pathetic amount of air, I know.

2. The prize-giving ceremony. So near and yet so far. One point stood between us and the Brits. Bugger.

At least we farked them up on Twickenham this Saturday.

Wie is daai dwis aan die linkerkant?

Hy besit 'n HP2. Wat hy soms ry. Tans is daar ook 'n 30th Anniversary 1200GSA in sy garage, so dit sukkel.

Ek het vir jou 'n lower seat as jy een soek. Nee, regtig.  ;D

Paar nice fotos daar Jacko.  Ek sien ons SA manne sukkel maar om die "race face" op te sit vir die kameras.  Too nice....  ;D

Good thing Malema do not ride a bike  ;) If the ANC get hold of this photo imagine their response  ;D

Jacko, thanks heaps for the personal view into the GS Challenge. As always your scribblings are a pleasure to read and having seen the "reject photos" I'm really looking forward to the fancy ones! Most important though: (a) the whole SA team always seemded to have a smile on the dial (perhaps not on the Pearl Harbour - new name for Ponta - sand stretch?); and (b) you guys were incredibly competitive for a first try. Congratulations all-round!

Given the experience gained, Team SA should walk the next one, wherever it may be!  :thumleft:
