Eastern Cape (Lady Grey)
S30 43 00.0 E27 14 38.3
Skill level: Novice
Road Condition: Gravel Surface
Remarks: Average speed recommended. Little traffic.
Spectacular views.
Location:
Turning of from the R58, you get to a beautifull small town called Lady Grey. If you continue through town you will eventually get to
the road leading towards Joubert Pass that will eventually meet up again with the R396 towards Barkley East.
According to https://www.mountainpassessouthafrica.co.za/find-a-pass/extreme-passes/item/421-extreme-passes-stats.html Joubert Pass is the 13th highest pass in South Africa.
Joubert's Pass traverses the Witteberg Mountains in a scenic loop
Some info as on padkos.co.za
"Joubert's Pass in the Eastern Cape is the "third highest [sic] pass in South Africa", and was built by farmers (of which five were Joubert) to allow them to reach their farms over the Witteberge or 'white mountain', that does its name justice during winter. You will travel through beautiful farmlands before going up through to Lammergeier Nature Reserve, and eventually descends into Lady Gray. The water reservoir east of town is now one of the main points of the nature reserve, and the dam makes for a great picnic spot. The beautiful Dutch Reformed sandstone church in town is a National Monument, where during Easter passion plays can be seen."
