190km/h on a dirt road? not bad if you only want to see the changing road surface conditions ahead. Dual purpose / Adventure bikes are primarily designed for the outdoor type that wishes to explore, experience and appreciated our beautiful country using dirt roads. Any speed above 120 km/h forces the rider to concentrate totally on the 'tunnel vision' area of the read ahead and therefore missing the fundamental purpose completely.
Well said Bomber :thumleft:

What a lot of bollocks.  DS bikes are to look at the scenery?  WTF, that is what a park-bench is for.  I recommend you guys ride to Kirstenbosch, park, let the air out of your tyres and be happy DS-ers.  Otherwise, just ride.  Sometimes fast, sometimes slow.  And the notion that only falling at high speed is a bad idea, is lubricous (although it does more likely end up in tears).

Look mom he kicked sand in my face. Call the cops "Here comes a true hero".

Not sure what happened with my previous post "Agreed" but it was rather in reply to "Bombers" post.

Someone said "People who get excited about the power of the 1190 are people who have never ridden superbikes"  >:D

Some ride bikes for the scenery, some for experiencing the great outdoors,  some for friends, company, feeling of freedom, getting away from home or whatever.  Some ride for the ride.  Each to his own I suppose. ....

@ Amsterdam !
Would like to get hold of you on a dirt road. Be
a man and come and join us technically boys
and ride some real bikes. Any poe&@"$ol can
ride fast. Us hardcore riders will rape you
with a twig. I bet Bomber will scull F$@k you that
you're head explodes.  :pot:

It is a great bike, but the thing that worries me is the power, the 990R was powerfull enough,

:imaposer: Bushboy - I promise you that Amsterdam will want the park bench once Bomber has taken him out for a little round the patch ride.....  :3some: We all know the 1190 is awesome, but me personally don't really want to do close to 200 K's/h on dirt.

When the 950 Adv first arrived we were also shaking our rag dolls and saying that the XR650R was powerful enough and why would you want more than a 640 on gravel and how this new 100 hp monster was going to kill off half of the riding community.  The 1150 Adv came at about the same time and added some fuel to the same fire.

We had to go through a learning curve with the 950's and the 990's.  (Remember how everyone squealed about the snatchy throttle on the first 990's....!!).  We worked out over time how to rig the bikes for the riding we do, and they have served us well.  Now that era is a thing of the past.  This is 2013.  I am keen to learn all there is about the new bikes and understand their benefits and limitations.  Especially if it costs someone else money initially.  So boys, go big, buy all the accessories, ride the bikes and keep us posted.  We will join you some time later on......  :thumleft:

In the mean time, I am quite happy to go anywhere on the 990.

@ Bushboy, Bomber11, Losper, NumNum et al - Calm down a little and reread my post.  My point is not about riding fast.  My point was about this need of people to put everyone in a box.

Ride your bike on the highways and by ways and where there are no ways.  Who cares whether you want to ride fast or slow, enjoy the riding, that is what it is about.  Some people want to ride really fast, let them.  Others ride really slow, let them.  But don't say that people don't get these bikes cause they feel the need to blast at crazy speeds on dirt roads.  That is like saying you shouldn't ride a superbike unless you spin up the back wheel out of every corner.

@Bushboy - You really don't need to challenge me to a race on dirt.  I ride a big fast bike and am rubbish at it.  When I ride my XR, I go much slower and am still rubbish.  But I enjoy it.  If you ride 10% as well as you intimate you will leave me for dust, I don't doubt that.  And on tricky sections, at really low speed, I admit I have tunnel vision.  I am OK with it.  Hope you all are too.  Now, if you have all calmed down, I go back to my park bench and watch you hardcore fellows ride by with your twigs.

Waar is The Reg nou. Hoop nie die ou het ons verlaat oor n paar grappies nie  O0

Amsterdam - you are missing the point completely. Show me the guy that rides a 190km/h on dirt roads and I'll show you a bullshitter of note. Having a bike that theoretically can achieve that speed on dirt doesn't necessarily elevate the rider to hardcore but more to word that rhymes with koos. Maybe you should try maintain the speed for a few kilo's and thereafter give us some actual feedback so those of us sitting on the bench can  :drif: at what we are missing out on. So in conclusion, spend some quality time at the Botanical Gardens so you too can finally wake up and smell the roses.

You probably did not see the Namibia video of 221 and 218 km/h on 990's  :peepwall:

Yes I did, but not quite the roads we encounter in our local neighbourhood.

I had the 990 at 230 (speedo speed) on a long dirt road when I saw a farm bakkie crossing what seemed ages away but took all the limited skills I have to stop without hitting it. I hung on the hooter and thank goodness the farmer noticed and headed back into the drive or I'm sure it would have turned out ugly. Needless to say I slowed down somewhat after that and haven't done it again.

Let's face it , high speed on big heavy bikes on dirt is stupid.
