KLR Air filter

I know the KLR's air filter needs to be cleaned regularly, But how regularly is regularly?
I ride a fair amount of dirt and some of roads down our way are pretty dusty.
Could you KLR boffins please advise.

Next question,
Once I have cleaned it, what oil or whatever do I use so soak it in in order to make the sponge dustproof.
