I don't like the stock number plate mount and the whole silly rear mudguard thing on the KLR.
Li's bike still has the stock setup and even though all the bolts are tight it rattles like crazy on dirt.
I removed my rear mudguard and mounted my number plate with hi strength Velcro to the rear fender. I think it looks way better.
Velcro seems to be holding well, Li is doing sweeper duty when we go riding so she will let me know if it comes off. The benefit of the Velcro is I can remove it on the really technical off road stuff. I was looking for a way to illuminate the plate and in the end I used the stock light and just mounted in under the rear rack. I had to make a modification to the Givi top box bracket to allow the top of the light to fit but it worked very well and none of the mods are visible without removing the givi bracket.
I'm happy with the result and the cost was very little (R15 for velcro)
I know the plate is not the PROPER SABS Official Gavment approved one but Ill play dumb if I get stopped.
