So yesterday after walking into eight or nine hydraulic shops looking for replacement seals for the KLR rear shock seal head and the piston, Bearing Man Group was the only place that had seals that would work with oil. Auto Motorcycles here in PE said a new shock was 10 big ones, so I decided to fix it myself. Well, almost fixed. The two seals cost me 10 bucks, and the old ones were really hard and quite worn after 27K km's. I got home, put the shock back together, and lo and behold, it didn't leak any oil. Pumped it up with 150psi of air, no leaks. Bolted it to the bike, bounced it up and down twice, and *wham*! she starts leaking out from the shaft. Bummer. I took out the shock again, and took it apart. Seems like the seal between the housing is good to go, but the shaft/seal head seal is suspect. Upon closer inspection, my shaft (well, the KLR's shaft) has some pitting on it. Gotta have that fixed sometime. I also saw that the seal head has a seal on the inside, but it won't budge. Is the unit pressed together or should I pry it out with a auger? Although the latter isn't favourable as I'm kak scared of scarring the unit. Anyone have some advice for a luisgat KLR rider like me? What I'm basically wanting to know is how the seal unit is made up, can I try and get the seal out, should I turn it into a paperweight, etc.
