In October this year I bullied EssBee into coming along on a ride to investigate a KZN mesa with an interesting abutment(?) named Ngilanyoni that I had noticed in Google Earth. We managed to find a track onto the mesa, and ride onto the abutment for a spectacular view.
The objective of today’s ride was to show the mountain to a few more dogs, and in particular Shesha who had trailered his 1200 all the way down from Gauteng for his beach holiday.
There had been some concern about the weather which has been very wet for the last few weeks, but today was perfect – no rain and a nice cloud cover to keep things cool. With the heavy rains over the last fortnight the Mudmonster put in a token appearance, but he is also on holiday and the best he could manage was a few scary moments and one –err- side stand incident of short duration involving a black Tenere.
The pack was 7 Bikes – lets see if I can remember – lamo, The Badger and Shesha on 1200’s, EssBee on the 990 with Mrs (M.) on the pillion, Navi on the XT660R and MadDog and myself on XT660Z’s.
Some shots from the ride out.
Lamo and Shesha showing me how to ride the descents.
Some tyre-gobble ruts – line selection kept us on our toes.
This is on a very steep and twisty uphill of about six hairpins. Would have been challenging without the tar.
The twee (and sometimes enkel) spoor onto the mesa. This bit was very snotty and quite tricky and I believe there was a spectacular sideways KTM behind me.
The approach to the abutments “koppie”
Navi and I on the top – It was then that we noticed the pack had split and the rest were delayed a bit with some Katoom manhandling through the mud.
Navi returning after having located the pack.
The pack approaching.
EssBee and M.
The Badger
Lamo
Shesha
The bikes on the hill. This was taken with my Normal camera and the curvature is real.
The road off Ngilanyoni
The pack gather on the main rod – I picked up a bit of foliage with my helmet cam .
The road down the Mkomazi towards Scottburgh.
Lunch and drinks at the Wimpy at Scottburgh went dowm well indeed.
A great day – thanks for coming along guys !!
