SPIRIT!! amongst the rider group and those that helped them!  :salut:(see, you have me typing in capitals!)

Thanks Wino - thats exactly it. Although some of the members could have completed alot faster, that's not the spirit, in for a penny - in for a pound. Boy, did we have an awesome meal that night!

SGB - yes the dimension of the added wet mud under the rock is tricky. thanks for your help!

I guess if you just used capable bikes like 640 Adv's it would not have been an adventure.

If you're so capable, why don't you go there with your new little toy and show us all big boy.

Are you a troll?

Well done Lost dog, looks like an awsome time was had by all, I remember some of the epic stuff we did there on our MX bikes and that was bad enough, hats off for doing it on DS bikes

Holy Smacker, some rough stuff !!! Well done - always nice to see we have some true adventurers amongst us WDoggers !! Thanks for the report.

Thanks - as PH said, from one such as you thats a compliment!

I believe that the only way to get better is to push your own limits. If you dont push the envelope you're wasting space.

Perhaps.

I have come to realise that my expectations of the 950 may have been a bit high, I need to tone down the technical expectations of ME on my 950. But, the 650 / 640 class still dont blow my hair back. I dont think my ideal DS bike has been made. I wait with baited breath for the 690 ADV.
Again, DS kit is heavy. I need to start following the ULTRALIGHT movement in hiking and aligh my Kit to that.

That was truly awesome, chaps! I must admit for this application, the big KTM seems a better choice than my beeg GSA, even with the 'mountain fast-n-lite' approach. I reckon some of those sections would be difficult inna 4x4, but perhaps taking along one support vehicle will help, if not to carry some 12kg bags of mielie meal for the local helpers...
Any comments?

I tend to shun a support vehicle for adventure trips - afterall, that's why we have a bike.
Obviously if there is a problem a vehicle would be advantageous

I'm not unhappy with the 950 on this trip, the picture PH got of me laying down was about the worst and most doff of my troubles. I lay the bike down a few times, but thats a function of the heavy kit and my experience with said kit. More practice - for sure! I wont start a BMW/KTM debate, but as said before - a major shortcoming of the GSA is the bashplate mounting. This patent BMW can keep - it truly is a shocker.

I now challenge any hardened 4x4 enthusiast to go do that route. Take some friends and a HUGE sense of humour!

:laughing9:
I'll consider hiring a donkey or 2, they have better ground clearance... and no bashplate to worry about.
Does anybody know if the Touratech bashplate is an improvement on the BM stock design?

This is how the locals use that "road" and others like it in Lesotho.
1 horsepower but proper suspension and clearance.

This was an awesome adventure, if you asked anyone if a GS1200 was capable you would have been laughed at, instead you just went and did it.

We should do a local practice ride with full kit. Anyone keen on coconuts up, long rocks down on a fully loaded bike?
PM me and we can play an overnight camping "one night stand" in the Gauteng area.
Do some real hectic riding to get there. Fully loaded bikes only.

Jeez Shark

I swore I would not do it again and here you are stirring big time

Nah - I think I'll give that sort of kark a break for a while
Going to the Rallye Raid next week - Lets see what that will hold for us

At least De-Wildt has a decent cellphone reception  ;D

Well guys you may have been on the wrong bikes, but you went there, did it, made it back.
An adventure is an adventure.

That BMW bashplate design is a real shocker, what genius came up with that idea?

Great adventure, I'm glad you all made it out allright!

This kind of post gets my but itching to get out there and do it, but it's gonna be a looong time before I'm good enough for that kind of ride.
This post also makes me think about the way I like to ride on my own. If something happens... Well, for now I'll have to trust cellphone reception.
Anywayz, the storey, pics, and everything about your trip was amazing, thanks for sharing, and please do it again!!

Great adventure guys.  That is an awesome falls.  I walked to the bottom and back when i went there with my school.

Ha Ha Ha !!!

Picked this up on the e-dirt site

The older I get the more fun and more likely this dual sport thing seems. Those guys in the story nearly all have even less hair than me too.

Good story and looks like there is lots of legal fun to be had in Lesotho.

I'm not that old ??? - am I ???

;D ;D ;D

The clown that designed the infamous 1200GS bash plate was at the 2006 GSC, when challenged about it's kark design his comment was...'Ve haf neffer herd about zis problem before, ve don'd haf zis problem in Europe'.......Well guess what Einstein, you okes in Europe don't know jack about African conditions!!!!!
He also commented that nowhere else in the world do guys ride GS's the way we do in SA.......
