Lever guards

I'd like to get those...lever guards...I'm sure there is a much cooler name for them, so when you moer neer the brake and clutch levers don't break/bend. Prices are ridiculous though. About a grand and I can't see why. So, why not modify somehow, using some flatbar and stock plastic guards. Is the a dog that has attempted this?
