Looking for cheap second hand GPS.... will this one do?

I know nothing about GPS... but i know i need one because i never know where the hell i'm going... 

I can buy this Garmin GPS III for about R700... will it be worth the money and do i still need maps for it? Will i get maps for it? How much moola will the maps set me back.

The application: Plot and plan gravel routes and navigate. No i don't need to know where the closest Mc Donnalds is...
