What a nice ride we had today!

I posted the “Planning” of this ride on both the Wilddog Forum and the Pretoria BMW Club forum, and I deliberately posted it quite late (Saturday Afternoon), my reason for this that when riding a place like Maraisburg, smaller groups just work so much better than very large groups.

So from the BMW Forum only Dickie (Spietkop – 800GS) joined for the ride, and from the Wilddog forum, Jules (660 Tenere), Rolling Stone (HP2), Lynn (XT660R) and Dakarboy (most modified 650GS ever).

We all met up at Uncle Harry’s and made small work of the 2 spoor all the way to Maraisburg. The pace was nice and fast without too much faffing around, just the way I like it!!!

We got to the first section of the dumps, this is where I fell when Marnus and I did the ride in February. I made it up this time without any hassle. Jules and Dakarboy also went up fine. Then I learned again that it is soooo much better to NOT warn people of a tricky section coming up, just let them deal with it. This is how we learn and how we build confidence and how we get better. Lynn had a small spill but nothing to worry about. After some encouragement she went for it and made it up perfectly! Spietkop needed some convincing after he saw Lynn’s farm, and he was sure that he could not get up the sandy wall. After a nice talking to and his nerves settled, he went for it and made it, with just a small “topple over” at the top. Rolling Stone gave it a go and he also made it up fine.

Then we played around a bit and Dakarboy could not stop smiling!!!  And he can ride that mixed breed 650GS of his like a plastic bike – awesome riding boet!!!!

Jules, too fast for the cameraman

It got very hot and this sand riding was getting to be some hard work, so we went looking for a shabeen for some refreshments.

After an awesome muddy detour, we found the shabeen and tasted the bitter nectar we were longing for.

Jules got properly stuck in this stinking shitty mud hole!!!

We were very stinky and very dirty, but very chuffed for a great day’s riding!!!

At home and my boney already all nicely cleaned up, ready to get dirty on the next ride!

What a RAD ride! Thanks guys, and Etienne for organising!  O0

I just want to say thanks for taking the pics first up. Something I always forget to do :-\ . It was a great pleasure riding with you all and it was the perfect pace for the perfect ride with the perfect sized group!! If this was my first ride in JHB I cant wait to see what the others have to offer as well.

Next time I will join you guys on the Zamalek. (you can see this wasn't posted from a mobile, so yes, I made it home!!)
Next ride I'm in for as well.

Cheers dudes and dudette.

Brilliant, glad you made it home safely!!

Keep your eyes on the "Planning a Ride" section, every now and then really cool rides pops up! It was great meeting you and riding with you  :thumleft:

Thanks for organising Etienne.

Perfect morning out on the bike. :ricky:

Thank you Boys & Girl, Was a awesome day.  :thumleft:

Today’s route had it all; single track, rocks, gravel, water crossings, mud crossing and a few technical ups and downs…. And small patch of white sand. It is great to take an 800 gs to places where some might only want to venture too with a Plastic.

Glad we do not have to travel all the way to Namibia  to have some fun in the Dunes.  The dunes encountered today was not nearly as difficult as the beach at Rhino park and WAY MORE FUN. The confidence was a tad low when we hit the Dunes by expecting the worse. The sand was not that soft at the base of the dunes, with the anakee’s at 1.8 bar only, but proof more difficult at the top of the dune and when momentum was lost, then the side stand of the bike becoming a extra un needed ornament.

Hope to do it again soon.

Looks just like the old Durban Deep area out by Krugersdorp.

WORD OF ADVICE:  That minedump sand is EXTREMELY corrosive. It's full of acids and who knows what.  This is NOT Umhlanga or Clifton sand.

Make sure you clean your bike THOROUGHLY after a ride like that. Also, I'd think twice about going through mud in the minedumps for the same reason.

But I know......it's so much fun.......
