Motorcyclist dies in joy-ride
2011-08-08 15:22
Johannesburg - A motorcyclist was killed and a traffic officer critically injured when a man ploughed into them during a "high speed joyride" on Monday, North West police said.
Officers tried to flag down a 30-year-old man in a Corsa bakkie five kilometres outside Potchefstroom on the N12 highway, Sergeant Kealeboga Molale said.
"He carried on driving after ignoring traffic officials, and in the process knocked the officer down. The officer then flew into the air and landed in the back of the bakkie.
"The man saw the officer in the back, stopped his vehicle, picked him up and threw him into an open field. He carried on driving at high speeds afterward."
As police gave chase, the man drove into two cars. No one was injured.
He then drove into Klerksdorp, about 40km from Potchefstroom, where he hit a motorcyclist.
"The motorcyclist died on the spot, and the suspect was also injured during this collision. He was then taken to Pshepong hospital in a serious condition."
The 40-year-old officer was airlifted to Milpark hospital in Johannesburg.
ER24 paramedics’ spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the officer's legs were broken in several places.
Police were investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless or negligent driving.
"He has not been arrested as we are waiting for him to recover," Molale said.
