I thought long and hard before posting this, as most people resent their stupidity being made public, however seeing as it's my stupidity and I am now at least wise enough to laugh at myself, I will share this with you and perhaps bring a smile to your face.
I bought a GSA at the beginning of the year and have been logging up the k's steadily, thoroughly enjoying the ride. No problems except for a cracked headlight which BM replaced under warranty.
One evening I notice that the instrument cluster back lights are off. Give the panel a tap with the back of my hand and they come on! This goes on for a few days and I think nothing of it, secure in the knowledge that BM will honor the warranty. Planning a trip to Rhodes and surrounds over Easter so best get this sorted and off I go to the dealer. He phones me the next day to tell me that they can find no fault with the instrument cluster back lights, but the new headlight is leaking water and they have replaced it. Headlight #3.
Pick up the bike and the lights are working. Off home to drop off the bike and I see the lights are off. :x Moer meter now starts to edge towards the redline. Tap it with the back of my hand, back on. Moer meter now well into the red. Anyway I need to get back to the salt mine so continue on my way home all the while planning a full frontal on the workshop. Pull into the garage at home and the lights come on. I walk the bike backwards into the sunlight and the lights go off. Back into the garage and the lights go on. Slowly, very slowly at first and then a bit faster the brain powers up and I go over all the occasions that this has happened and it dawns on me that the small clear plastic window on the instrument cluster is in fact a light sensor and the lights work in the dark. Obviously when I tapped the panel with the back of my hand I blocked off the light hence the lights coming on.
Took out the instruction manual and read " 5 Telltale light for anti-theft alarm (OE) and sensor for cluster lighting" Reminds me of the front cover of an installation manual for the TV games we got as kids which read" Now that you have tried it your way, may we make the following suggestions". Like I said, no fool like an old fool.
