Noisy exhaust on 4 stroke - tips please

Hi Everybody

The exhaust on my XR400 is a bit too loud for myself and my neighbourhood's liking. As far as I can deduce, the bike has the standard exhaust. Is there some way to tone it down a notch that won't break the bank or affect performance?
