It was great when we, (4 x KLR's + 1 x Honda) met you at Brandvlei. That was an indication that we were not the only crazy once.
The Pan was great, but when you took the turnoff to Williston, I was not sure who made the wrong choice. When we hit the storm and snow on route to Calvinia, I wandered if you had a diffrent weather report, but reading this RR.......well me all made it home.

My apologies for hijack.....Just dropped off my dakar for 40 000km service with Claus in Killarney Gardens, the "KLR submarine" was on the lift and being worked on. Ive never seen so much sand & believe it or not ... Stones.. that have come out of the bike.

Seems a lot more work is needed to get it up and running. Respect to all of you guys that rode through those weather conditions

The Tanqua-Naught rides again!

Thanks to some Claus magic, she's up and running.  Claus removed buckets water, and a small koppie worth of stones and sand.
I also spent a happy afternoon stripping the clocks, switches, locks, lights etc and cleaning them all out.

She was a pretty ugly beast to start with, so she's pretty much back to the same condition as before, just a tad cleaner.

Here's some pictures during the clean up operation.

A Bucket of water from the exhaust

I'm convinced all it needed was a new spark plug

A fine rock collection

As ugly naked as she is dressed

Who says oil and water can't mix

Sand and grit everywhere

Steering bearing needed a little work

Sand in the slot. ouch.

fantastic ride you have a t shirt that not many others have, wish I could do one of those rides, good luck with the KLR hope your insurance is upi to date looks like a lot of hours work :thumleft:

I will run it for a few km's with new oil, then drain the oil and refill with new oil (and replace the oil filter again). I am sure the "old" new oil collected all the remaining sand. You don't want to have grinding paste lubricating your crank do you?
Also covering all connections, clock innards with a rust preventing/electrical current improvement layer/spray might save you some hassles later.

Were there any components that needed replacing?

The return of the Tanqua-naught...

Took her for her first land voyage since her swim - messing around in the forest above Kleinmond, followed by a braai for us and an oil change for her.
She seems to be running sweetly again, no noticeable problems, just has a little more character than before  ;D
