So, after discovering copious amounts of oil in my airbox https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=157992.0 I started the interweb search of probable causes and came accross this great thread of a re-build on adventure-rider
https://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=847942

Point is that it is stated that there are ONLY three reasons for such an oil leak:
1) over fill, which is something of a common problem with these bikes and new owners...judging oil capacity and need for more oil.
2) Seal failure on the counter balance shaft, leaking oil from the crank case into the right side housing that has the vent tube on it.
3) Compression leak issue, causing a pressure build up in the crank case.

One can probably add a fall over of the bike onto it's side to that list, but no such issues whilst under my ownership so it can be ignored for now.

Now, I am hoping the previous owner just overfilled, so I will start there.

After making sure the oil is at the correct level I will route the crankcase vent tube from the engine housing into a small Coke bottle and go for a good hard ride.

If the bottle fills up with oil again then I would need to have a compression and a leak-down test done which would probably lead to either a top-end overhaul, or a splitting of the crank cases, or both.

Any comments on the above will be appreciated.

Cheers
