I invited a new dog (Dik Daan) and an old biker buddy (Gert) , who has recently bought a DS bike to do a run up through the Springbok Flats to the Nylsvlie reserve and back.
We decided to fill up at the beginning of the Garage on the Molto Road, near the Police station ( Before Roodeplaat Dam)
A short way out Pretoria we turned north on to the lovely stuff, and it was not long before our New Dog to be, Gert did his first small water crossing. Mooi So Gert :thumleft: On this same stretch we saw two heards of Kudu and one rooibok.
We continued north , north east through the Dikenong Area where there is just game farms one after the other. Here, we again had to ride the slab. Smoke Break for the two addicts. On the Pienaars River – Mable Hall junction.
We then found the good stuff again, :mwink: :mwink: which took us further north, all the way up to Settlers. At Settlers, we tried to get some stuff to feed the worms at the local hotel, but the bar was locked, and the “Tannie” had gone to BelaBela (Warmbad) Having chatted to a local about the nearest food, we were recommended to either Warmbad (22km) or Nylstroom (21km) away. Having consulted the GPS, we found a dog’s-leg that took us further north to Nylstroom, on the good stuff. We popped out onto the slab, between Nylstroom and Roetan. A short run west, toward Nylstroom, and we found UNA PIZZA, about 5km on the left, before the town.
There menu was NOT just pizza, so we all three enjoyed Hake & Chips, boere style.
By now it was after 14h00, so we got moving back down the slab, eastward, until we found the dirt running further north up to the Nylsvlie Reserve. Here the roads got sandy.
Gert on his stead, a 1000 V-Stom
Dik Daan on his Adventure
It was not long before we started getting large pools of water in the dirt road. Just made the trip interesting.
The mud monster tried his best, but failed today, even the newbies escaped his claws. :ricky:
When we eventually reached the Nylsvlie reserve, time was catching us, so we decided to immediate carry on with the road which leads eastward, and eventually south again. Pity we did not have the time to actually go into the reserve, and see what’s there. Here we had a Duiker run infront of us for a short while. A good excuse for another ride that way. To be better planned.
We headed south and stopped for petrol at a small road side pump and café at Tuinplaas, on the Settlers-Marble hall road again. Having tanked up, we again took dirt south, hoping to go to Moloto, but it was clear the shadows were starting to kreep across the roads, so we decided to take the shortest way home, being the slab through the Dikenong area again, onto the highway at Hamanskraal and home again. We again stopped for the nicotine addicts to get their “fix” here.
Then whilst traversing the Dikenong Game Area, on their slab, we noticed a sign. “Perry’s Restaurant & Pub”. Indicating a definite bush pub of a sort. Now even though shadows were gathering momentum, these dawgs could not pass this one up, so off we went into the bush and found the establishment in the bush.
Run by an elderly very ENGLISH gent, introducing himself as Graham. (he sounded very “colonial” I dare say), Turns out he and his missus have been there in the bush for 30yrs! Already.
Nice little pub, and grub etc, with B&B available sleeping 6 (Six) (I clean forgot to get his telephone number and mark the GPS position.) More reason for another trip that way.
We had one nice round, to sooooooth the throats and end off our adventure for the day, before taking the slab south again and another week in the rat race. All arrived home just after dusk, with a good 300 odd km done on dirt, and about 150 on the slab, for the day.
Thanks guys for a great days riding.
