Riding in New Zealand

I will be going to visit my son and family in New Zealand (Christchurch) for a few months and it appears there are some good trails to ride while there. But I need to decide between buying a bike (or my son buying a bike) and renting a 400 - 700 while there. But so far I have only found touring bikes to rent and to find a good second hand bike is proving difficult.

Does anyone have experience of riding the NZ trails? Renting bikes in NZ? Buying and reselling? Any other (useful) advice for riding in NZ.
