Road conditions in Mpumalanga

Hi. My bother and I are riding from Joburg down to Nelspruit next week. As an alternative to the N4, I would like to turn off at Machadodorp and take the R541 towards Badplaas, then the R38 to Barberton over Nelshoogte Pass and then the R40 from Barberton to Nelspruit. Can anyone please give me an idea of road conditions (potholes, etc) or any other negatives along that route.
