In 2013 we limited the entry to 350 riders with Gold being given a two week preference, then opening Silver for a further two weeks. This resulted in only around 60 entries being available for Bronze riders and it became a keyboard race to get those spots. We then opened a waiting list and this had nearly anther 90 hopefuls when we closed it. Clearly there is a big demand for Bronze riders to be a part of the Roof. Ideally we would love to accommodate everybody and have a Roof with 500 or 600 riders but sadly, a combination of logistics, terrain and infrastructure simply does not make this possible at this stage.
So for 2014, we have decided that the fairest way will be to limit Gold & Silver entries to 300 with Gold once again being given a two week preference period. This will leave 100 spots for Bronze entries and we propose that a qualifying stage is held on the 24th May with the first 100 qualifying to enter the Bronze event.
We have worked out a route of approximately 70km with one refuel & control point which we expect top runners to complete in 3 to 3.5 hours. Obviously it is of an extreme nature but is designed to avoid bottlenecks with most of the tricky bits downhill. Competitors will be started at one minute intervals according to the results of a draw on Friday evening.
In addition, this event will be open to Gold & Silver riders who want to have a practice ride in Lesotho under controlled race conditions as well as to riders who have no intent of entering the Roof itself but want to experience a bit of the Roof magic.
Full details will become available as soon as the Supplementary Regulations have been finalized and approved by MSA, but in the meantime get training and put the 24th May in your diary!
