shortening side stand?

my bike fell over in a slight sidewind while parked, I have now become a bit neurotic about this happening again.

I adjusted and checked the rear shock, but it does not appear change much while parked, has anybody shortened the side stand to get the bike to lean a bit more, or should this not be done?
