varying from slipping clutch most of the day in 1st and 2nd gear in Lesotho to faster double/single track riding such as this one, Moz or Kaokoland.

Xpat do you change front sprockets when doing a trip like this or Lesotho?

I change rear sprocket. I ride 14/50 for general purpose DS riding like the one in this report (i.e. most of the time), but for Lesotho I always gear down and use 14/52.

so the piston/rings are still original?  if so that is v impressive for a 'ready to race' machine. any major oil usage between services and what are your intervals.  sorry if youve mentioned this before elsewhere but im thinking of selling my 950 and getting a 500 to go play with 2sd somewhere!

Or do like me and just have both.
Together they cost less than a new bike.

I havent done a trip on the 500 yet. Only used it so far for Zone7 and Quarry duties.
But I am itching to slap the long range tank on and disappear into the Richtersveld for a couple of days.

xpat how thorough were those border posts? any inspections on your bike? require anything other than passport?

You need bike papers - certified copy and I would have original license disk if you don't have it already on the bike (I have copy on bike as it gets destroyed).

You will be most probably the only customer there, so it will be fast on one hand, but on other hand they may be relatively thorough if they are too bored. Have papers and there will be no issue.

Forgot to attach the water points I found riding those tracks. Here they are, attached as gpx waypoints.
