The idea to do the 25th Springbok Rallye came about last week and i found myself in a good space and was free to ride. Sprocketbek, the infamous photographer, said he was keen to join :thumleft: We met up with some usual suspects and hard riding men...Tweets, Nemodakar, Hazzard, Grysalp & MrT.
SP & myself did as much dirt as possible on the way up & arrived nicely warmed up for the following day...but not before we drank, braaied & told lies...
SP's clutch kakked a bit so he went & took a leisurely ride to top of Swartberg to braai with some mates.
The following morning found us up surprisingly early and eager to ride 8) It was my virgin maiden trip to Die Hell & i had no idea what to expect....really. We all rode Swartberg to Prince Albert for fuel & backtracked to the Hell turnoff (Gamkaskloof) https://www.diehel.com/ I was a little ahead & waited for the guys & saw a three quads on their way in atch:
It turned out that they stopped at the first gate & went to the shop with Dad in his 4x4. I thought i recognised him so we had a brief chat...its a customer....funny how one does not recognise folk sometimes out of context!
I had no idea of the road ahead but stories abound how difficult, treacherous & lewensgevaarlik. The Quads & the 4x4 were kicking up lank dust so i just sucked it up & eventually past them.....not before roosting the 4x4 who was taking up the whole road knowing i was behind.....sorry Graham! ;D
The road in had lots of giant whoops & a little bit of everything. Clear vision ahead in lots of places so you can hang on the cables a tad. Then comes the gradiants, switchbacks & moerse dropoffs....you don't want to leave the road here...ever :deal: A casavac scenario would be a nightmare!
On the way i picked off a few other bikes going in and was having one of the most memorable rides ever....no really....its just awesome :drif:
Finally i dropped into the first gate/camping area & met up with some of the guys & others :thumleft: Everyone looked chuffed & happy
Then we made our way to the locked gate where i found some Mountain Bikers having a rest. We chatted & compared bikes....
I read almost every bit of literature in the museum about the previous inhabitants but found no mention of inbreeding or skande...how disappointing...
Then the road out.....bloody hell....even better i tell ya! :ricky:
Was lekker riding by myself so i did not wait for the other chaps....went quickly to Oudshoorn for supplies & hit the campsite again...one very happy rider! :thumleft:
Don't have many pics at all as you can gather....i was having to much fun! 8)
