Summer riding kit?

Although I rode bikes around the farm for many years, I never took to the road until I bought my XR in May this year. I bought a nice riding jacket, pants, etc and all went well.
Although both the jacket and pants have removable inners, as well as ventilation, they are simply unbearable, now that summer has arrived and we haven't seen real maximum temps.
I'd appreciate some advice, please. I don't want to loose the general protection and padding offered by these items, but I have to get something that is much cooler and which has even better ventilation. We mainly do road trips on the back roads through the Karoo and I'm planning something for the Kalahari as well.
