We are a bunch of friendly kwat riders who are slowly but surely adding the DS option to our CV. First to commit was myself (Plothond) about 18 months ago, and then came Jag(s)hond on his 1150GS in December and now Plathond (aka Platte - his kwat is crocodile green) has also added two wheels to his parking spot.
He picked up his brand spanking new 640 at ProAction on friday afternoon and that is why this trip was planned on the spur of the moment.
Two phone calls - Platte, Jagshond - wat maak julle more ?? Niks ??, well not anymore !!. Onto the forum as well but, alas the forum was either at the Dros or was planning to go shopping with mama on Sat, so it ended up just the 3 of us !!
The planned 06:00 start happened at 06:30 - so no excuses for those who said that they got there and we had already left
Meeting up at the Engen
We followed the N1  and then the N4   until the Hornsnek overpass and climbed onto the DeWildt secondry road to Lethlabile and stopped at the well known Jerico BP for a short break and a fuel top up. Platte was still running his bike in and our speed never exceeded 130km/h
Our fuel consumption on ALL three bikes was almost identical at 5.2 liter/100km
Our route then took us past Legonyane
and up to the Borakololo game reserve gate where we disturbed a rather large bird eating this:
From Borakololo we turned around and went back a few k's and turned towards Assen. This was our first taste of dirt for the day and Platte's first EVER.
Allow me to digress - Platte rides his kwat like he stole it. He wheelies, jumps and generally gets up to tricks that us mere mortals can only dream of. But this two wheel thing !!!!  Well for a while at least. !!
The road from Assen is nice dirt road and we bounded down it at a nice comfortable rate until we got to a short piece of tar road to Rooiberg
At Rooiberg we were a bit peckish and looked for a Wimpy / Dros / Steers / ANYTHING !!! to have a bite
No no this is Rooiberg and this are a little simpler here. We came upon this place which was being renovated and ended having a really lekker bite to eat. They called it a "Continental" breakfast which consisted of 2 eggs, bacon, boerewors, tomatoe and toast. Maybe they should rather change the name to "Southern Africa Continental Breakfast"
Plathond looking very happy on his new steed
From Rooiberg the road really gets sh!!tty. Apparently it's been like that for years. There's no sand , but it's really rocky   and you get a real shake-up in the process but luckily it's only about a 10 - 13km stretch and then apart from some really sneaky sand traps, it a really nice road
And then the T junction that leads to Rankins Pass
This road had some interesting moments and the sand was thickish in places together with the odd puddle just to get things a bit dirty
At Alma we turned right and followed another dirt road to just before Nylstroom (Modimolle)(Why can't they just leave the frekken place names alone). Again a road that tested our limited experience.
Just before Nylstroom we left the dirt
And as we all know, a good trip needs a good ale. So after a really lekker 514km round trip and some itchy rear ends, we stopped off at the Silver Lakes Dros for a wet one
Thanks Jag(s)hond and Plathond - a great outing !!
