For a while now Shark & I have been promising to get him on a trials bike to give it a go, so when he mentioned needing a light ride on Tuesday due to a sore finger, a plan was hatched...

The finger that started it all

The veld next to my house has some quite good and varied terrain, from trees to rivers and rocks, with the occasional Gautrain eathwok thrown in for good measure, so at the perfectly civilised hour of mid morningish, we set off.

First up was a bit of gentle rock stuff, and a small river crossing just to get up to the interesting areas. Then a bit of a bumpy rock climb, Sharks only comment being "I tried to sit down..."
Next came a small stand of bluegums, offering some good logs to practise throttle & clutch control, and the effects of good timing.

Then on to a bit of a rock for some technical, balancy stuff. Mostly bumpy, very off camber turns, with some quite tight lines needed to get through.

Test time....  :deal:

DOES ZAMALEK AFFECT YOUR RIDING SKILLS?  ???

And the test?, I hear you ask...

What better use for 2 empty beer bottles than a rock top figure of 8 loop...

The results...

Preliminary findings indicate that 2 beers fit comfortably in a camelback, Pilsner Urquell is great, and nothing beats spending a morning stuffing around on bikes. as for the rest, I think I'll have to ga back this weekend for some more testing...
;D

From there it was general stuffing around through the veld to the local quarry, not sure if we were meant to be there though...

:peepwall:

and then up to the Gautrain workings for some hillclimbs...

or not, as the case may be.

Then it was home time, only one little obstacle to get through,

It wasn't the beer, he just claimed to be hot & tired  :dousing:

A quick drain of the carb, a few kicks, and the little beasty was in its element again, theres not much that can keep these bikes  down.

Thanks for the awesome ride Shark, any time you want to go again, give me a shout.

Sweet,I would love to play on 1 of them!
P.S Sharks getting a bit top heavy....possibly long term affects from Zamelek testing?

Lekker Shark! Always wanted to ride a trials bike :drif: Did a course years ago on my FS1 50 ;D

Very nice!!!!

Next bike on my never ending list of bikes to own..................

Wow that was fun.

The first hill I tried to sit and gun it, then I realised how many bad habits I have.
That hillclimb was a funny one, I swear I would cream it on an enduro bike but the trials tyre seems to lose grip in specific dirt conditions.

Thanks a lot GRIM, that was awesome.

It also looked easy to me till I tried it. The top lip is pretty close to verticle though, and the surface is just loosly piled dirt - there has been no compaction since it was built  end of last year. Maybe we should try again with the KDX aswell. try some of the rock stuff aswell, I am sure it will handle the camber.

Good fun, this is something I want to try as well. Would like to take KDX along to see how the two compare.

I thought that this was going to be a religion thread for sure!

The riding looked like fun though!

I understand trail riding and MX, but what is the diff between off road and enduro?

Different scoring and about 30kph.

Offroad is race flatout for 400km (nationals) or 200km (regionals) time is the decider. Average speeds 60kph. Mostly dirt roads and twin track.
Enduro is scored on points where you get penalties for not making certain points in time as well as special stages that are timed.
Average speeds are low, 30-40kph. Terrain is rougher, single track with obstacles.
WFO enduros in Natal are a mix. They run the national as an Enduro with proper scoring and the rest as more offroad rules but Enduro terrain.

Trailriding is what Trailrider does so well in his area. Plodding around having fun.
Trials is like a test of ability and skill.

HHHusky, lets take the KDXie (whats plural for KDX?) and go for a ride. We were talking about setting an endurobike Trial in this area, same rules as Trials but with enduro bikes.
Lets test it out.
I can make that climb with an enduro knobbly and momentum. Also enduro suspension for the smoother faster run-up.
