I wanted Tracks4Africa to plan routes knowing what roads are gravel without having to zoom all the way in on Google maps to check if roads are gravel.
I didn't want to fork out more money for a Garmin GPS so I used my old Samsung S7 which I have settled on using OsmAnd app, which seems to have all the roads.
I bought the digital Tracks4Africa maps, I thought about the T4A app but I wanted to be able to plan a route a my computer rather than a tiny little screen.
Used Basecamp then got frustrated so used Mapsource, much easier.
I plan my route in Mapsource,
Save As GPX, connect Samsung to computer,
Copy saved GPX to Downloads folder in Samsung,
Open (tap) file in Samsung,
Choose OsmAnd app to open and there you go,
You have your navigation route on your phone.

The Samsung is not as bright as a Garmin in Daylight, but it hasn't caused major issues.
I also have a Rain sim (1Gig @R50) in the Samsung so if I require data to use for Waze when in cities I have that.

So that was my solution for a planning and navigation tool.
