Coming back from the Springbok rally yesterday, BTW, damn good rally, our party of 4 split up, with 2 of my friends taking a different route.
Going down R62 passing Ronnie's, I see a new KTM 990 S parked, I turned around, only to find its another buddy of mine, waiting for the 2 friends of mine. He was on his way to the rally, when he heard the news about our buddies. He told me the shocking news that they went down between Riversdale and Gysmanshoek. So we waited in Barrydale till after sunset for them to arrive.
They both went down in the same corner, a blind one, bikes lying 5m apart from each other. Damage to both bikes, and one rider with probably a broken anckle.
I post this for 2 reasons:
1. The importance of ATTGAT. They were doing about 80/90 km/h when they went down. The second rider came down on his Arai, scraping the ground. He was not hurt at all. The other broke (?) his anckle, and he was wearing boots. His comment was: "The first thing I'm going to do is to buy myself proper MX boots for ALL my riding!" Coming off on gravel at that speed, with those injuries, is a true testament of proper protective gear.
2. When they went down, they had some damage to the bikes to the extent that they could not ride further. They phoned KTM George, and soon Jaco and Patrick arrived with the spares. They fixed the bikes, tested them, and sent my buddies on their happy ways. I mean, Saturday afternoon on a long weekend, prolly 150 km away, that's great service!
These friends of mine are both seriously experienced riders, and that corner took them both by surprise. I am seriously thankfull they are relatively OK, I am sure they will be pretty stiff this morning! The sad part is that the one bike is less that 24hrs old! The other one is about 2 months old!
I will not mention their names, that is for them to decide.
