Jacobsroodt, Ferdi and myself left Durbanville at ±7am.
Ferdi and Jabobsroodt
We met up with Parkinoff in Ceres.
He was also bringing stuff with for Tribes. I only had a handlebar brace.
Last fuel at Op-die-berg (next fuel is Calvinia). Ferdi stayed behind because he had a work related conference call scheduled for 10am.
Compulsory this-is-the-end-of-the-tar P and photo stop. I stayed behind to make a quick phone call and to give myself a gap to hoof it a bit
then this happened
flat rear, and as anybody who has taken a E07 off an Excel rim before will tell you, breaking the bead is not easy. I used the two tire levers in a "scissor" fashion and got the bead off after ±10 minutes. I only have a small bicycle pump and inflating took a while. I passed a message on to Parkinoff and Jacobsroodt via a passing Land Rover that I am on my way. Took nearly an hour to remove all luggage, fit a new tube and put everything back together. Ferdi also had a flat that morning on the R355 and it took him 7 minutes to fix.
After nearly an hour:
before Eselbank we met up with Mapsource and Pienkhemp, We also encountered many 4X4's. It was Pienkhemp's first trip off tar. He did better on his first time than I did on my 50th time.
I shot ahead to get a few action shots on the only real piece of sand on that stretch
Jacobsroodt cruised through as if he was in the Spar's parking lot, Parkinoff about the same, just faster. Pienkhemp had a big snake manoeuvre going and saved it just before taking out the cameraman and that made me miss the Mapsource moneyshot
Parkinof had
some issues with his bike and we left him in Nieuwoudtville. We were originally on our way to Calvinia and made it to Nieuwoudtville 30 minutes after the petrol station normally closes, but luckily they were still open. Jacobsroodt and myself took the 70km tar to Calvinia. We reached Calvinia in the dark. 16km outside Calvinia we took a left on the Klipwerf road. Then followed 95km of my favourite riding ever.
First time offroad in the dark on a road I didn't know with someone I never rode with before. My spots stopped working earlier in the day so I rode next to Jacobsroodt using his very bright spotlights. Getting to the end of the road was a relief and disappointment. Everything just clicked.
We got to Lekkeroog after 13 hours on the road
The Northern Cape hospitality showed itself. The guy in black top above is rightsideup who was highjacked into joining us. Good meeting you Stephen.
We slept in Jaco's wool working barn again. Much better that pitching a tent
Day one ended early on day two ;D
