Water treatment filters/pills

Can the chemical minded or pharmacist, help out here. On a trip we are planning, we need to carry water treatment pills or water treatment filters. I need to find out and make 100% sure whatever we take with WILL work and we won't end up with diarree or some sort of pest.

Any body with actual experience need reply, or a damn good answer ;D
