Thanks to all who came with and made this a very fun day on the sand. Even though there was quite a bit of traffic on the dunes and the sand was very rutted out, we seem to have been it through the day without too many incidents. Goon fell on his left shoulder when he lost control of his bike on the landing after a huge jump over the spaceship. The shoulder was dislocated and the ACL in his shoulder damaged (torn), so he will be wearing a sling for the next 2 weeks. Good luck Goon.

To all the other riders, hope you had a great time. From what I could see, all the first time sand riders did quite well the moment they hit the open dunes. Please just note that the sand is not normally that rutted and the dune crest are not normally that messed up. That was all due to the film crew who had been shooting there for the past week. Thus, when you go back next time, you will have a much nicer surface to play on.

OK, so enough talking, show us your pictures!!

PS Thanks for the permits Archangel. And thanks Wolf and team for the backup vechile.

Lets do it again soon  :thumleft:

Thanks all, was nice seeing old faces and connecting forum names to new faces

Enjoyed plaing in the huge sandbox, on the way out i had a small mechanical but the ride was great, thanks Kreef and co.

PS: If someone has a spare 18 or 19 inch wheel, let me know, pull a nipple through my rim and broke two other, think it's time to replace the rim.

Last time I knew of an Atlantis ride out, my bike was in the workshop undergoing some serious repair. This time it was keen to come along, but nervous as all hell. I'm not so sure the 650GS is made for sand riding...  :-\

My failed attempts at getting through the rutted entrance had me very nervous and apprehensive. I stalled for a fair while removing indicators and what not before gaining the courage to venture out onto the dunes... WOW!!! What an awesome experience!!! Felt very much like snow boarding at high speed!!! I had a few off's but nothing to dishearten me enough to give up. It was great to actually get a feel for what it is like to RIDE on sand...

I have to give a huge thumbs up to Taryn! If I'm not mistaken, this was her first real off road experience and on SAND!!! And freaking amazing riding too!!! Hope to see you on another ride soon...

Thanks Kreef for all the organising! And thanks Archangel for getting us the permits!!!  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Goon, hope you're not out of action too long... and that you have a quick recovery...

Just a quick update from Goon: He is at home today due to the pain meds, but he just wanted to say a big thank you to Nova and co. for assisting with the bike evac. And to all the rest who convinced him not to pop the shoulder back into its socket by himself :)

O, and PinkGoat, that 650GS is def made for sand riding :) Apologies for revving the living sh#t out of it while taking it up the first dune :) I just wanted to hear that exhaust roar (and I missed the gear change :))

Here are some pics that Skedonkie posted on the Planning a ride section:

O yes, give a big hand of applause for Nova who actually took the DRZ into the dunes with Super Mortard tyres.  :hello2: :hello2:

I don't think I have seen anyone THAT shocked to realise something that everyone knew before hand... that super motard wheels have almost zero grip in sand :)

who's the chick in the tutu? did Skinny come down to cape town for a sand riding day?  :deal:

Was great fun, will post the few pics I took when I can find my camera.

You were doing just fine, leave the clutch alone though!  :deal:  keep the bike high in the revs kick your arse way back and look where you want to go :D  Admitedly the 650GS does seem to require more attention to balance than most bikes

You looked GREAT in the tutu N[]va... Don't let anyone tell you different!!

Oh, and thanks for letting me ride your bike out of there... Awesome feeling the difference with a lighter bike!! Much easier. I should've taken Brenda's bike out for a spin on the dunes when I had the chance... Oh well, next time...

Glad there aren't pics of me giving N[]va a lift while he wore the tutu. I should have told him to walk.

When we left Goon's bike's key at Scrat's neighbour he asked: "Eh.....how come you're wearing that?"
"Oh, it's along story", N[]va said.
To which I answered:"And it's got nothing to do with me".

Sheesh guys chillax!

I happen to think I look good in pick ^.^

Great day, great learning experience!  My first time at Atlantis on a bike and I learnt that fitness is a factor!!!

Special thanks to Bonnova who helped drag my Dakar back from over the brink and PinkGoat for arranging the permits through Archangel while I was in Joeys the pothole capital.

I must say it got quite hot after a while ... I'm getting myself a tutu as well for next time  :ricky:
