What's the best way to experience a new country?

I am in the beginning phase of planning a trip to Botswana, and now I've hit upon a bit of a stumbling block.
The question is, what is the best way to experience a new country?

Should I stay on the road as much as possible and ride a big loop through the country, stopping at a different place each night?

Or should I book into one place for 6 days and do outrides from there?

This trip will probably be in a 4x4, but I still think the question is important.
Would like to hear your input.
