Did you go up or down Penge pass? And the other way around - did you do that other pass I gave Mark?
Judging by the pic going up

Nope, the evidence is inconclusive. I was in contact with Mark before this, and I believe the plan was to go down Penge and up another pass I've came upon few months ago. That one runs north of Penge pass, but connects at the top to the route Penge route takes on the way to the Park Gate.

So they could have gone either way - in each case they would be on that picture heading down.
Here is my picture on the ridge line two track

[member=41]sidetrack[/member] : Your picture looks like it was taken at the same spot where Noneking's one was taken. However that doesn't indicate whether they went up or down Penge pass (we now know from Noneking that they didn't do Penge pass at all).

We seem to be talking past each other for some reason. I thought you were suggesting that the picture was taken at the top of Penge pass - which it clearly wasn't - but you have never said that, so maybe I was wrong to assume that.

However you seem to have missed my point that you can get to that point on the picture by another pass, route of which eventually connects to the route from Penge before the picture location (see map below). I call that other pass for myself Ga-Mokotho pass based on the name of the village at its bottom, but it probably doesn't have any name. And that is the pass Noneking and Co did on this ride.

In the attached map you can see Penge pass in purple with waypoint PENGE PASS TOP at the top of the pass, and that other pass I talk about in green-blue starting at Ga-Mokatho (that is the one guys did). And I put location of the picture as waypoint 'PICTURE LOCATION'. As you can see on the map, the two routes (penge and the other one) merge before the picture location, so they could have gone either way.

I knew from Mark that he was considering coming from the east (main gate) and either goi down Penge and back up the Ga-Mokgatho pass, or the other way around (you can connect the two passes at the bottom along Olifants river - that route is not shown in the map though). Either way, they would have gone through that Picture Location in the direction they went at least once (once the other way around). So in that scenario they could have gone up or down Penge and still ahve exactly the same picture.

It is a mute point now as we now know that they just went up the other pass and didn't do Penge on this ride, but maybe it will give you some ideas for good ride, as that other pass is doable - with a bit of effort - on big bikes and connects eventually to the Penge route.

I hope this clarifies my point  ;)

Xpat I went and cleared the cobwebs from my dirt highway brain. So here is how I have it and I see what you mean, I did not know the "pass with no name" to the west that Noneking did also leads to that point where the picture was taken. Also cannot remember if I rode it before but anyway Penge I have done 4 times and it's tough. I assumed that they went up Penge to get that photo taken with the mountains then on their left.

Yes, we are on the same page now.

I have found that other pass purely by chance looking at satellite images. It doesn't seem to be known here much (I found out later that exkdx knows about it), so I doubt you have done it.

As said, it is doable on big bike (at least in the south north direction) - I have done it on 990 solo and Noneking and Co have done it now. I would say it is about Orrie B pass level of difficulty, so I would recommend it to anybody who feels confident doing that one.

These three passes - OB, noname and Penge provide for quite a few exploratory routes in the area - you can combine some of them for a round trip either from east for Mp guys (let's say coming from Hoedspruit) or west (let's say based on Steelpoort) for GP guys. And of course you can throw Serala route into the mix, but that one I would not recommend on big bike, even though it has been done few times.

Yip to be fair I doubt Penge pass even has a name, it's just the closest town (mostly ghost town now). So I dub it "Sidetrack Pass" just because it sounds better than "Wolfskaap / Dirtwarp Pass"  >:D There is another route Noneking posted before, 20 rivers or such - where is this in relation to the tracks above ? I will see if I can get you the Bewaarkloof route from Pierre but that is proper hardcore, next level.

[member=41]sidetrack[/member] : 23 rivers or Serala ride comes out at the bottom of the OB pass from north. It starts at the top in the Wolkberg reserve. We have done it with BuRP 3 weeks ago:

After digging around I see I have been on the 23 rivers route. We did it at night after running late with a couple of punctures. Was interesting with KTM 530 and TE610 headlights

That must’ve been very interesting.....
Know of a few guys on big bikes that underestimated that route and were only able to get out of the valley just before midnight.
