Hey Captain J you are right.
There are no posted signs warning you where not to drive or ride.
Lots of folk got huge R2,500.00 fines over December.
Most of these people were ignorant of the laws.

I mean its easy to say 1km from the high water line but how the hell do you know how far you are from the high water line?
So is it fair?

Captain J,

Cross the pont to Trennerys no problem just stick to the main road.

Cebe cottages should not be a problem but check with EC Nature Conservation in East London speak to MRS Oates she is very helpful.

Thanks will also check with Janine.
I have over time noticed that SA Road Maps, GPS Maps, T4A and online purchased maps are ALL different and some show some roads and others dont etc.  Like the road to Cebe doesnt show on most maps yet when I was there 2 years ago it was a fairly decent road and they were busy working on it... So is it a main road??  Look the last thing I want to do is ride somewhere I'm not supposed to...  But the law in Transkei seems to be very vague and in theory you are not allowed to drive / ride to Cebe...  but if you have been there it makes no sense because it is a decent gravel road?? Locals use it every day. I dont mind stay off the beach and tracks etc but the main road and 1km from the high water line thing is very vague and you can end up with a very unreasonable R2500 fine... :-\

Captian J,
because the Kei is so silted up at the moment, the ferry cant run at low tide.
So try time your crossing to be around high tide,

This is correct. The 2 hours around high tide are the operating hours, with some built in extension if you are willing to "incentivise"...

BTW, ignorance is not an excuse when it comes to the law....

Great report. Thanks for sharing with us. Respect for you guys, clearly +/- same age as myself, to go bundu bashing, rock climbing, traversing river mouths, deep sand etc, that takes some serious effort. Respect.  :thumleft:
Beach riding  :nono: Others have covered this. Like you say, **** happens.

Nogmals, thanks for sharing and you guys sure have shown where GS's can actually go, with a bit of effort.
Mooi so. :thumleft:

The old cliché that "ignorance of the law is no excuse" has been taken to task on various occasions and does not stand as strong as been suggested.
The bottom line is that the defendant will have to prove " that there is a reasonable possibility that he/she did not know that her act was unlawful" Coetzee v Steenkamp (579/2009) [2010] ZANCHC 25 (18 June 2010)
This could be tricky in it self. I say no more.  Ha Ha.

Hi all...
Great report JP , looking forward to doing a trip here soon myself...
I emailed mrs Oates via the link you posted and asked for a map of where you can travel...
Hopefully I get a reply soon if so will post routes allowed, also asked about obtaining permission
to visit areas not on the map of proclaimed roads, so looking forward to her response...
