Wildside’s way to the Zingela Bash -2023

Since Covid struck in 2020 we had done no riding so when we discovered that there was to be a Zingela Bash we decided this was a good opportunity to dust off the Honda’s, shake out the spiders from our boots, familiarize myself with the route and get ourselves ready for a weekend away.

Looking at the list of Wilddogs attending we saw some names of people we hadn’t seen in a long while and this would be a super opportunity to catch up with the old dogs again.

Departing from Howick allows us to enjoy a lovely route through Karkloof and out on the gravel road towards Rietvlei. A short distance on the Mooi River / Greytown tar road leads us to the Middlerus /Weenen gravel road.

A few Wilddog members will be familiar with this route. However, at the Muden /Mooiriver intersection we turned right continuing on a gravel road until we joined up with tarred Muden road.

We were now a bit concerned about fuel availability and Kingsley (Offside) chatted to one of the locals who directed us to a taxi rank (just down the road) where we could top up with some fuel.

Almost opposite this taxi rank was our next turn off. The last time we road this route it was still gravel, but it has since been tarred but the Tugela Ferry road where we turned left was still a fairly good gravel road. Coming out of a dry winter has certainly left its mark on this very dry and harsh terrain. Rocks, shale, dry aloes, thorns and dust were now our surroundings.

It was great to see the Tugel River still flowing.

These cattle had managed to find some shade and a pool of water.

After a brief stop to return the butt back to its natural state and to satisfy the tummy we headed off again in the direction of Sun Valley.

CROSSING OVER A TRIBUTARY TO THE TUGELA RIVER

The abandoned orange orchards on the left were a warning of what we would see when we turned right into the Sun Valley Estate. The narrow sandy roads were rutted and partially washed away, only broken walls remained of the vandalised buildings and no fences or gates remained.
It was a bad road that led us onto the other recommended route from Weenen that would take us across the Bloukrans River to the start of 'Little Sani".

Crossing over the Bloukrans river - but this is Kingsley coming back to look for me.

Hi Charlie...it was so nice meeting you as well. Can't believe we live in the same little village and haven't bumped into each other.
You have certainly planted that India seed....plans already in progress. 🤭
Hope your back problem improves.

We hadn't ridden in this area for many years and I was a bit apprehensive about the state of this little pass. I stalled on the first sharp left hairpin bend as my back wheel (with balding tyre) spun too much on the loose shale. After a few attempts to take off again I finally managed to pull up alongside Kingsley to get my nerve back and catch a breather.
Our next stop up the pass was thanks to a herd of cattle moving down and heading back to their kraal for the night.

The rest of the pass was a bit rocky with some steps and loose rock, however, it was manageable and without any mishaps we found our way to the top and were relieved to take the right turn to Zingela.

It was on this section of road that we came across Penny (in her bakkie) who saved the day and gave Simon a lift back to camp after he had taken a tumble and injured himself. At this stage of the ride I am sure that many riders are tired and concentration is poor so it’s easy to be careless and make a mistake.

Oh boy…what a treat to arrive and see the welcoming sight of the Tugela river and watering Hole Pub.
The G&T’s were calling !

We enjoyed two nights of comfortable accommodation in one of the spacious Safari Tents that offered a pleasant view of the river. The accommodation at Zingela is so well spread out that one doesn’t feel crowed at all.

Even the warthogs has space to roam and didn't feel threatened by all the guests.

The rest of the day and evening was relaxed and pleasant as more Wilddog members arrived
and old friendships picked up again and new introductions made.

Saturday morning was an awesome day…some chose to relax at the camp while others went on outrides with JonW and Kevin.

This old pooch was enjoying left overs from dinner.

Below is JonW's group heading out for their ride. Jon has posted some wonderful pictures of his group out in the bush and river beds and doing what riders do best.

Sarah rides pillion and does an amazing job of keeping in sync with Kevin. They took the bigger bikes out for a 120km ride.

MrG (Dave) and his group arrived mid afternoon after a long ride from Durban area and it was really great catching up with him again. The last time we had seen each other was at the Kei River Bash.

It was with a heavy heart that we said good bye Sunday morning, after breakfast, to a great group of Wild dog members.
We left Zingela with Kevin and Sarah and headed off home down 'little Sani' towards Weenen and finally back to Howick.

We were nearly at the turn off to 'little Sani' when we came across DR BIG 750 who had a huge gash in his front tyre and with the help of Offside and Outthere they managed to change his wheel and get him safely on his way.

Heading down the pass and making way for the cattle now walking back up again. This was a brief moment to enjoy the lovely view.
