101km Hofmeyr Dirt.
Received an invite from friends in Hofmeyr to spend the weekend with them in their newly acquired house.
We were asked to bring the KLR, and not the usual GSX-R, so we realized that we were going to have a “dirty weekend”. Left PE early on Saturday morning, battled with thick mist on Olifantskop Pass and some low clouds closer to Middleton. Arrived in Hofmeyr around mid-morning, and spend the rest of the day catching up on some gossip.
Sunday morning early, the older bikes (XT500 + XR500) were fed Quickstart, and kicked into action. We had some treats and cold drinks packed into back-packs, no provision for emergencies or punctures. Bikers in these parts are not concerned with our city slickers and our pet phobias.
We rode out of Hofmeyr, through the township towards Molteno. The dirt roads were well kept and decent, and the rains from the previous days made the going really easy. We played to our heart’s content on the roads between Hofmeyr, Steynsburg and Molteno. Encountered one vehicle, a police pick-up, and saw plenty wild animals. My friend almost took out a small buck that just appeared between the thorn trees.
The scenery is spectacular, and we had plenty photo opportunities. We ended up back in Hofmeyr later in the afternoon, having ridden exactly 101km for the day, with frequent stops to take pictures and eat some of the homemade goodies!!
Definitely worth spending some time in those parts of the Karoo. The mountains and vast fields are pretty as a picture!!
It was a sad affair to start the KLR on Monday morning and return home.
