Hi all

My 1982 Honda XL185S is up for sale. Very much a project bike as you can see.

I bought this bike about two years ago with the intention of restoring it to its former glory. I became another example of the “why in the hell would you be so stupid” club.

Bike was advertised on Gumtree, phoned the guy who was very nice and he told me that this was a project bike, just a bit rough, but very nice. One hell of a bike he said. You won't be sorry, he said. I was very keen on the bike and the guy seemed nice enough, so I bought the bike over the phone (yeah, yeah, I know, I know).

The biggest reason was I work in Cape Town CBD and he was in Somerset West. I didn’t want to drive all the way to SSW, like the bike, drive back to Durbanville to rent a bike trailer, then back to SSW and back to Durbanville once again. Saving myself time and money I said.

When I went to collect the bike, it was in a little bit more rough shape than he said. Also forgot to mention that he recently had a little accident...

I couldn’t get the bike to start and took it to Tim’s Motorcycles in CPT where it stood for another year before I got it back (another long story, but I’ll skip this one). Engine was running beautifully. (Tim only cleaned out the carb which was full of gunk).

However, too much time had passed and I had since bought another bike or 2 and kind of lost interest. Bike has been standing about 3 months since the last time I started it and I am struggling to get it started again. Don’t know if I’m flooding it or whether the carb jets are stuck from standing too long without running.

As you can see, it is a bit rough, but a perfect project bike for someone with more skills than me. I have the papers here somewhere, but could not find it tonight, so at the moment selling without papers until I find it. I will then update post.

I have only ridden this bike once around the close I live in, but I have picked up the following issues:
- Tank resprayed, but not that nice of a job done.
- Dent right hand side of tank
- No ignition switch
- Petrol tank dirty inside. Needs to be cleaned before it can be reconnected to carb.
- Only rode it once, but clutch slipping quite badly. Definitely has to be replaced.
- Kick starter return spring broken
- After his mishap the guy did a MacGyver on the rear brake drum. Don’t know how to explain it. See photo.
- One foot rest bent and will have to rewelded.
- Incorrect saddle fitted and does not fit properly
- Dash cluster modified
- Second hand handlebars fitted
- Gear lever damaged

Included in the sale:
- 1l Thumper oil (as recommended to me by Craig’s. Still unopened)
- New clutch cable
- Second hand clutch lever
- New grips

All this can be yours for only R 4 000. Own a bit of classic Honda heritage for a little bit of money. Great excuse to spend many hours in the garage away from the wife.  :imaposer:

Oh and one last thing, but is very important and NON NEGOTIABLE.  :deal:
If you come to my house to look at the bike you are welcome to greet my wife, but you are NOT ALLOWED TO MENTION THIS BIKE AT ALL. As you can see on the one photo I have 4 bikes at home and have endured more than my fair share of snide comments and rude remarks about this “so-called bargain you bought which is just standing around”.  ::)

Any member giving her any more ammunition to use against me will summarily be evicted from my property!  :ricky:

Bike and I is in Durbanville. Phone me on 082 514 0051 or [email protected] should you want to take a closer look. Or do like I did, just do an ETF to my account and come and collect!
