So I took my son on his first adventure trip.
We had slight time constraints and decided to stick to national tar and gravel roads.
The trip took us three days from Randburg to Paarl, going via Potch, Bloemhof, Kimberley, Douglas, Prieska, Southerland and Paarl.
We both were on Honda NXR125’s. Robby has only just turned 16, so that was his limit. I couldn’t see myself doing a 1440km trip, at 80km/hr, on a 990, so decided to join him on a NXR, and at least I could ride “Flat Out”, even if it was only at 95km/hr with the wind slightly from behind…
There were a few adjustments to make going from the 990 to a NXR. The first was changing your mindset, don’t hurry anything, it WILL take time…. The second was, leave your tools at home, being a Honda, the only thing that went wrong was the idling was a bit high the one morning, and we fixed that with a Leatherman. Then it took some getting used to putting in 4.8ltr after traveling 160km. This was going to be a cheap ride!. The total trip worked out at just under R400 petrol per bike. Anyway this was certainly a trip to remember, and who better to do it with than your son! Sorry for the limited narration….
Start of trip - Randburg
Crossing the Vaal
Mielies - on the way to Potch
The long road down
Vaal and Orange confluence - Douglas
Orange river crossing
