Firstly, thanks Losper for the great trip report, and the photos are fantastic. Just want to get out there and experience it all too.
One BIG problem, I don't have a bike !! I am investigating though and want to ask what is the difference between the 2 Africa Twins in your photos, and then, which one was the easier to do that trip on ? Will appreciate your guidance a lot.

Wilfwalk,  we had 2x manual and 2x DCT (automatic) Africa Twins on the ride.
The pro's and con's of both has been discussed at length on this forum. I personally have a manual but it seems that the the DCT  model is gaining popularity by the day. The guys on the DCT's said that the auto box made the technical riding much easier for them. I prefer to have clutch control so I think it is personal choice but you can not go wrong with either of them. The Africa Twin has a very low center of gravity and the seat can be set at different heights so it should fit you perfectly. Please send a pm to Hardy de Kock (on the forum), he will be able to give you all the info you need on the Africa Twin.
BTW, in our group we have a rider called 171Steve (on the forum). He is about the same height and weight as you and he rides a 990adv without any problems.
Where are you situated in the Freestate? (Honda Bloemfontein is an awesome dealer and will gladly assist with a demo.)

What an awesome looking trip... would give my left nut to do that type of riding, not far from us here in Oooos London..

Those AT's are fantastic machines in the loose, tight, slippery stuff...

Only issue I have had was mud packing on front wheel with knobblies on... wheel gets locked up proper, like riding a plough..  :lol8:

Some clever person out there must have a local fender raising solution??

Striggs, I have a simple and easy solution that works brilliantly.
I have attached an alu plate to the front mudguard and it just scoops the mud off, works perfectly.

Armpump,  my bike has Rumbux crashbars that does not allow fender risers to be mounted and that is the reason for the alu scoop.

Cool :)

Just in case other guys have stock then :)

Awesome as always. Good to see oom ETS on a ride report  :thumleft:
