21 May 2021

I woke to a glorious day with an amazing view over the plains to the distant mountains. What a privilege to experience such a beautiful part of this country called Namibia, with a cup of coffee.

I had breakfast in the restaurant with my hostess, Anna, and some tourists.

After breakfast, the staff clear out the restaurant, but Anna says that she is going to leave it open for me and put out everything I need to help myself and make more filter coffee. How generous and considerate? So, I have a few more cups of coffee and enjoy them on the deck overlooking the plains.

It is a beautiful day, and as I am sitting basking in the sun, I am joined by a curious looking local resident.

Time for some exploring, so I removed the panniers from Matilda and headed off to Solitaire.

In 2013, I rode both Remhoogte and Spreetshoogte passes, with 3 friends. Ever since then, it has been a dream of mine to do it again and that is where I headed to make that dream a reality. Just outside Solitaire is the turn off towards Nauchas and the passes.

On the way to Remhoogte Pass, I saw this dry riverbed filled with the most amazing blue rocks and boulders, Brandon’s colour was blue, so I stopped to take some photos. A Land Rover, with 3 occupants, came down the pass and they stopped next to me.

First question was if I was OK. Upon my confirmation that I was the second question was how about a small whiskey. It was 13h20, and they have obviously been partaking of this liquid for some time, but as I still had some challenging riding to do, I politely declined the offer.

They saw the stickers on the Top Box, switched the Land Rover off and got out. I shared my story and Johan Burger, the driver, asked me where I was heading and I gave them a basic idea of my route. When Divundu came up, he said that he knew Deon, the owner of Rainbow River Lodge and that he was going to contact him and arrange free accommodation and a Tiger Fishing trip for me. There was the normal scepticism on my part, but one never knows.

After a few photos, we exchanged numbers, they wished me well and were on their way.

I worked in Nam for 9 months.

I understand your skepticism, but those Nam boys normally do what they say. It is really a very small community and everybody knows everybody or knows somebody that knows somebody.

Happy that you are still safe.

I can pick up from your posts that some days are harder than others.

Enjoy the solitude, but also enjoy the compassion and fellowship of fellow people. You picked the right country to do this trip. You will find abundant joy in interacting with people that lives in a country that makes you tough and resilient but also understand that they are dependent on other people

Hi J. I am actually back at home, the trip is over and I am just writing about how I felt that day. Your comments above proved to be VERY accurate and that is still coming, I have nearly another 10 weeks to cover.

Namibia is not just a great country, its people are an example to many others.

Enjoy the rest of the RR.

Marius

Onward to Remhoogte Pass.

Along the way, I find my windmill and then the start of the pass, where Brandon's 8th sticker goes up.

Remhoogte Pass, section 2.

I have resized photos to medium, not small, lost too much picture quality first time around.

The Dunlop Trailmax Missions have now done over 2500 km and have served me well, tar, gravel and some sand, all at the same pressure. 2,9 Bar at the rear and 2,4 Bar in front.
