OK, so I decided to organize a little bike trip through the Tankwa Karoo and back through Wupperthal via Doring River.

This trip came about, as I have (maybe "had" after this trip) a few friends that were newbs to this adventure biking thing. I did this loop about 4 years back with my old KLE, and it was fine then. Really it was!

The weather forecast kept on changing, so we were not sure if we should go. On Thursday, it look OKish, and we decided to go.

Then Mister Murphy stepped in.

Roost aka Rimless, were without rims for his KTM on Friday eve still. He eventually got them at about 8PM, but without a rear tyre fitted on the back rim. We decided to move our departure of 9AM on Saturday from CERES, to 10h30, so that he can catch up.

I took the backup vehicle with Bud and my bike to CERES, and left the bakkie at the Shell garage for Justin. (Justincase) On the way there it was absolutely bucketing down. We smsed the guys to hold on, so that we can let them know what the weather was like in Ceres. Too late, as they were already on the bikes.

Monkey boy arrived first. Completely soaked and frozen. The Spur staff took all his loose clothing, and hung it up in front of the grillers in the kitchen, while he was soaking the floor.

I phoned Mertenhof, and they assured me there was sunshine out that way, so I decided not to cancel the rest of the group.

Krag Kris, his son and Geoff arrived about an hour later, but they missed the worst of the rain.

Roost eventually managed to get a tyre fitted, and arrived at about 11h45. Now we were late. Our last fuel stop was now Prince Alfred's hamlet, as Oppieberg closes at 12h00. (The extra 50kms range added, caused a few problems later)

We got properly frozen and wet going over the koue bokkeveld, but when we arrived at Katbakkies, we rode into sunshine and completely dry roads. What a pleasure.

We followed the Calvinia road up to 80kms from Calvinia, and then took the turn off to Doring River. The 2 spoor to Doring, got a lot more sand, and quite a bit of really slick mud since the last time I was there.

Krag Kris had a spectacular low side, in the sand, with the Vstrom spraying sand meters into the air as he opened the throttle on the way down. Now damage to the bike or rider. He knows how pick the soft spots.

The road down the mountain to the river was washed away, and gave the newbs some good practice. (and some experience  :mwink:)

We arrived at Doring at about 5PM, found the river in Flood, with the SAS Willehond on the other side and 7 bikes to get across, and not enough fuel to ride around!

I will now open this link to the rest of the crew, to start posting some pics before I write the rest of the RR.

ag nee man , I was just settling down for a lekker read.

Can't wait for more.

Klink of hier n goeie storie aan die kom is ..................... :thumleft:

I was gonna trailer to Op die berg and do the Cederdberg to middelpos, but waking up in the Rain I decided agains the mud feast.....you are brave :thumleft:.

Tau, thanks a lot from all of us for building that raft. If I catch the bugger that left it on the other side though...

Anyway, it was getting dark, and someone had to fetch the raft. I was looking for volunteers, and suddenly found myself and monkeyboy on a deserted river bank.
Even Krag Kris turned bushman and hid his 6"4 behind a thin tree.  :peepwall:

Time to strip down, and jump in. I hope no one post that pic!  :eek7: I had a wee, and decided, might as well do it in the water. To say it was cold, would be the understatement of the year! I could not even pee. It was too cold for that! We crossed the river hanging on for dear life onto the safety line.

Half way across, and the water was under my tette, and I was shattering teeth! Monkey boy followed bravely, and all of a sudden the river bank had a crowd again, cheering us on!  :wav:
Somehow k@k comments are not so funny when your private parts are frozen solid and you can poke someones eys out with your nipple stands!

We got to the other side, and I took some pepper and went for that wee. Once back on the other side, the loading started with Shredder's ktm. (Some tips here. Do not use the centre stand, Tie on as high as possible, move the bike back as far as possible, and stand in front while going across. Found that out scarily in the dark later on.)

And so we got the bikes across one by one, at about 45mins a round trip. We only did the first one in day light.  :xxbah: Shaun had a 1100 pig there, and they almost tipped the raft in the current. We could not see them, but we heard the shouts and splashes.

When I took my Klr across, it was too far forward, and as I was standing at a precarious 5deg angle only, I almost caught a dive as the current pushed the raft's nose under, and I only had a dangling rope to keep myself from falling in. I quickly back tracked, and Shaun kindly pulled us across, while I added  ballast to the back.

The mud bank on the otherside created some entertainment and Bud managed to drop his bike twice before they walked it up. Roost did a good job with the other bikes. We got safely to the other side, at about 22h00. We had another 24kms to Mertenhof in the dark.

Then the heavens opened up!

I organized the group, so that we could rotate the riders through the gates, to save some time, with Roost in the front, and me in the back.

After a not so nice experience with Andy and a muddy Alternative Route, I have since tried to avoid mud. Now I had 6 bikes making tracks in front of me on wet clay, it was raining, freezing and pitch dark. Boy was that road fun.

Roost was having a ball, Bud was pinching rings. Krag Kris was hanging on for dear life, Shaun was wondering what the fuss was about, Monkey boy used his previous AR experience, Geoff was trying to duck paddle the 24kms, and I was choking the Klr handle bars to death!  :ricky:

We got a little spread out, and Monkey boy's bike took a dive off the right bank, after taking a run up from the left bank! Geoff and I got him back in the road, and then Mr Murphy jumped Roost, and put the wrong co ords into his Gps. When we got to Mertenhof, we were 4 bikes short.  ::)

I the meantime, Roost's group decided to send Bud down a farm track, while they waited for us in the wrong main road. As he got to the bottom, he dropped his bike, and could not get it back up. He shouted to Krag Kris for help, who promptly pulled rank and sent Roost to go sort it out.

Meanwhile back at the farm, I used my tracking skill to see where they went. (not too difficult following 4 zig zags up the road)

I found them, and brought them back. So, at 23h45 we started the fire for a braai and some serious R&R.  :3some: :3some: :bueller:

We then convinced each other that Sunday's weather forecast would be right, and we will have a nice sunny day....  :peepwall:

Wow!!  :eek7:

Now show the bloody pics to prove all of this!!  :peepwall:

I am getting the first pics and some video clips tonight. Will post immediately when I have them.
