Ek het al n paar keer my enkel verswik, maar niks ivm daai enkel nie, bly hy is amper reg.

Update: Last weekend, exactly 5 months after my accident, I went on the Cape Canopy Tour. I needed to “run back to the car” to fetch something. When I reached the car I realised I had just done my first mini-jog. The tour itself involved 40 min of hiking to get to the pick-up point at the end. I managed! My foot is still stiff and sore-ish (especially a day after any “jogging” exploits), but I am definitely more mobile.

Today is exactly 2 weeks since my ORIF surgery and I am to start partial weight bearing, which basically means that my injured leg must go through normal walking motion, but still using crutches to take most of the weight. Been going to physio since day 3 in hospital. Stiffness of foot, calve etc sorted and laser treatment to increase healing.

I have very little pain, more discomfort from the boot and swelling when I take it of to shower.

That is not fair! How come you could start with partial weight-bearing after only 2 weeks? I was told strictly no weight for 6 weeks. It must have something to do with the hardware…? The physio and orthopaedist both told me no physio on the foot at all (I could work on my leg) until the bone had healed completely. I think they were worried that I would damage it even more. Apparently, if any bone in your foot is just slightly out of place, you get hardware. I think your bones were more than “slightly out of place.”

The bone mending is the quick part - the soft tissue and the blood circulation takes a while - my Ortho said - 6-8 weeks for the bone and an additional four months for the soft tissue - that's around 24 -26 weeks in total ... half a year
Thanks for a great post. :thumleft:

How true. It’s the soft tissue that’s giving me uphill. There is no pain in the area where the bone broke (mid-foot), but still pain on the front ball (transverse arch) of my foot and along the outer edge.
Thanks for the thanks!

My medical bills now adding up to close to R60k and haven't received all bills yet.....
Luckily most of that in hospital so medical scheme will pay. Physio and follow ups for my own pocket.
Also lost the R8k I paid as a deposit on our holiday....
Loss of income for 6 weeks hurts the most..... Hopefully I'll get a belated christmas pressie from PPS in January

So much for building back my off-road confidence on my bicycle. I managed to break my wrist (in medical terms - distal end of the radius) when I went over the handle-bars while mountain biking last weekend. This is turning out to be an unlucky year. I go my whole life without breaking a single bone and then bust myself twice in one year. More medical bills...

That's real bad luck!! At least you're not on crutches anymore......

Good luck with the healing!

Agreed fully. I must say, if you have to choose between breaking a hand or a foot, I'd choose a hand any day! I am still mobile, I can still drive (broke my right hand, so the left is still free for gears) and I can still be active (can walk instead of cycle). The pain is also not on the same scale. Anything but crutches!! I expect the healing time to be a lot faster as well.

That's bad luck indeed.Hopefully 2015 will make up your bad 2014.

Best wishes on healing up.

It has been almost two years since this ride... About high time to go back there! Lance and I will be heading to The Hell with some friends next weekend.

I want to find that one bend in the road, just after the top of the switch-backs on your way out of The Hell, where our last ride started unravelling. It will probably seem silly now.

I still need to do physio exercises to keep the strength of the foot up to par. Wearing heels or any type of sandal with a heal is still not fun at all. Good thing I usually live in slops and tekkies, but I do need to look smart for work meetings. Sigh.

wel Zanie, intussen was julle al op wonderlike en tegniese ekspedisies. Ek is seker hierdie trip sal 'n breeze wees. Ek en my vrou is onlangs soontoe. Geniet dit!

Get some black takkies :lol8:

I had a prang on a corner on a route we take fairly regularly. Obviously the outcome wasn't as drastic as yours, but every time we go through that corner I treat it with a great deal of respect! I don't feel so bad though, because everybody I ride with has crashed on that corner.

excellent i have just read this report for the second time what an experience it is to ride those roads Swartberg Pass must be on every adventure riders bucket list
