After a few months of using oil, I found oil on the top of my engin on the right hand side. Thinking it has to be the right gasket after cleaning the oil screen (yes a hobby mechanic can do it ) I went searching. Problem was even after thorough cleaning it didn't want to show itself when idling. This corresponded with my observation that the oil usage was more severe when riding long distances - ie the bike working.
Found the culprit this morning - the copper washer on the oil feed below the starter. It seems that it lost little or no oil when idling - but enough when riding. Will retension the nut some more - think the copper washer would like to be tighten - see what happens after that before replacing it.
